American Idol Songwriting Competition – The Top 20 Songs Reviewed

Joe Taylor over at SpinMe.com has been giving the competition way more attention than I have and has some great insights. (Judging by his post titles, I imagine he also found out how much traffic he can get from Google with that search phrase in his title.)
I listened through each of the songs and must say I was bitterly disappointed in the awful crap they picked for the top 20 songs. Each song is filled with a numerous overused cliches and the arrangements and melodies are trite and uninteresting.
This is disappointing for the simple fact the competition was supposedly going to be about bringing quality songs to the table for these finalists to belt out. Instead we have the same mediocrity we’ve always had.
I must admit that despite this, the songwriting finalists and certainly the winners are going to have some huge doors opened to them after this competition. Perhaps they are smarter than me and realized cheese was the recipe for the American Idol Songwriting Competition, and are just using these songs to get in the door.
In that case, my kudos to them. Seriously!

I know. I was quite disappointed, as well. They all sound like the same song and the lyrics all read the same, as such! I submitted my song “Chasing Dreams Away,” which is still up at my Myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/thisonegoestoeleven . It may not be a great song, but I thought it was better than a lot of what was picked for the Top 20.
Ah well, nothing much ventured, nothing gained.
