American Idol Songwriting Competition in full swing

By Don • Apr 25th, 2007 • Category: Songwriting Contests, Songwriting News

According to the official American Idol Songwriting Competition site, the producers are finalizing their short list of 20 songs. After that, supposedly next Wednesday May 2nd, voting begins.

Update: This is from 2007 Songwriting Competition. Newer info for 2008 is located here.

You can have people sign up to vote by going here.

Some songwriters are getting very inventive with their song campaigning. Songwriters Jeremy Cottrell, Jason Gantt, and Steve Misamore created a MySpace page to recruit listeners and voters for their song “My Chance”.

Others continue to send me MP3s for their submission – which I kindly remind them I am merely reporting the songwriting news, not running the competition.

Did you submit a song? Have you heard anything after you submitted it? What was the experience of sending in the MP3 like?

  1. Thanks for posting the timeline. I was wondering how everything was going to shake out.
I submitted to the contest, which is very exciting in itself, and I’m wondering now why there’s so much mania surrounding it? I’ve never seen such a fuss made over other songwriting contests! The blogs I’ve seen…people getting so worked up…debates over it….etc. I think everyone needs to lighten up and have some fun!
I am, anyway! Good luck to everyone who submitted. You’re already a winner for doing so!

  2. Well now that the 20 are up, has anyone else been surprised that all the submissions were re-recorded? My own song didn’t make the cut (the fools!) but I had no idea that they would be doing this. At first I thought “hey, these are all really well-produced” , and I’d expected to hear a greater variety in recording quality. After talking with my producer friend we determined that these were all from the same studio, and I suppose that makes it more fair to the songwriters. Has anyone made it into the top 20 that can confirm that this is what happened?
