4/4/2007 Update:

The songwriting competition is on. Check our latest update (including instructions on how to submit your songs) for details here.

For readers who couldn’t possibly care less, skip to the next item.

For those that do, here is what we know so far:

It is a contest we first mentioned a few months back which is designed to provide good songs to the finalists. The problem every year is when the winners release their first single, it is usually a really sucky song. So, the Idol people are opening up a global search for good songs. Actually not a bad idea.

Entertainment Weekly reports the show is still “planning a national songwriting contest to determine a winning single; the competition, which is not yet finalized, is slated to be open to anyone — signed or unsigned — who submits a tune to a to-be-named website.”

Might it be American Idol Underground?

The songwriting contest will also involve viewer voting. People can vote on the best song for that artist to release.

There’s more …

American Idol appears to also be using this as a way to bring back some of the viewers favorite performers. Ace Young, Vonzell Soloman, Tamyra Gray, and others are rumored to be some of the names. These performers will be the ones to sing the songs that the viewers decide on. It’s possible an entire show will be spun out and dedicated to this portion of the contest.

Sure, some readers will think the whole concept is absurd. But for those that do “songwriting” as a living and rely on it as a paycheck, this can be a great opportunity if not just to get your foot in the door and access to the right people.

How these songs are chosen and how you can submit your songs is yet to be announced. We will let you know when we find out.

No more excuses. Get the new eBook and FINISH YOUR SONGS:
