Songwriter Nick Daugherty aims to get a record deal in 365 days
By Don • Dec 6th, 2006 • Category: InspirationIn the spirit of the 4/4 challenge and the Thing A Week project, Nick Daugherty also placed some hard deadlines on himself to accomplish his goals. Check out this video about his quest to get a record deal in 365 days. His self-appointed deadline is July 7, 2007.
(By the way: I love how the PLAY button is located on his nose. Heheh.)
After that, head on over to his MySpace and check out more videos, listen to his songs, and read updates on his progress.

Wow, the self-commoditization cancer spreads. OK, the guy is obviously driven and part of me wants to cheer him on but how creatively unhealthy is this? Let me count the ways:
1. Defining success as validation from some one who works for an outmoded industry that has been looking backwards ever since the Internet.
2. Putting a deadline out there like he’s a CEO of a corporation that is launching a new product. Great for detergent, not for a relationship to support a creative career.
3. Feeding into the fame-for-fame’s-sake junk culture trap.
4. Using more sound bites and reductionist clichés than a market tested political ad.
5. Forgetting that the higher purpose of creating and sharing anything artistic is to enrich other people’s lives–not just the artist’s.
Sorry for so much negativity in the comment, but this type of bad creative hygiene has to be stopped.
You know Tim, after you point that out, his promo clips do have that “O-Town, Making of the Band” feel to them don’t they … ? All good points. I might have to reassess my initial excitement. Despite the fact that the “record deal” aspect is a little dated, it will be interesting to see what happens on 7/7/07. -dm
