  • Songwriter Steven Bowers on growing as a songwriter:
“Eventually you have to get into that [storytelling] mode of writing. You can’t keep writing about what’s going on in your own head, internalizing everything, so that’s what I’ve started doing with this record.”

    His take on co-writing:
“You just get a little bit of colour from somebody else. Everyone has that one thing that they do, that they do really well. Ron has this incredible ability to make a story or a feeling get through in a heartbeat, whether he’s using a guitar or not.”

More details on how he worked with one particular co-writer:
“Dave’s kind of the same; he’s this incredible melody writer. We’d get together and share our ideas, and I’d focus on the lyrics and he’d work on the bridge and melody; it was very structural the way we’d put it together.” (Link)

  • Soul legend Stevie Wonder’s mother and co-songwriter Lula Mae Hardaway has died.
    She was 76.
  • Moe. takes inspiration in classic story songwriting
“All of us are really big fans of pop songwriters,” says Garvey, who sings and plays guitar, “in addition to just about anything else that you can imagine. We like a lot of different styles, but especially pop songs. Stuff like Steely Dan and Elvis Costello, for that matter the really classic American standard kind of songwriting. Anything that tells a story, that’s evocative in terms of songwriting.”
  • I’m going to see Mason Jennings tomorrow night at The Grey Eagle. I’m psyched!
